Energy

The Utah House is about 60% more energy efficient than regular houses
its size.  The well planned landscape contributes to the energy savings.

Energy Saving Landscape Design Features

Trees have been strategically planted to reduce energy load within the
house.

Deciduous trees were planted to shade the south and west side of the
house as well as the groundmount evaporative cooler. Shading helps
keep the house cool and reduces energy use in the summer.

In the winter, the deciduous trees will lose their leaves and allow 70%
of the sun's heat to enter the windows and provide interior warmth.

The Utah House has a raised bed kitchen garden. Most food travels in
the U.S. more than 1,500 miles from farm to fork. Growing food in our
kitchen garden reduces energy used for transportation.

A low-impact push mower is used instead of a traditional gas-powered
mower.
